David Burnham, AMA Supercross Mechanic
My journey into powersports began when I was three years old. My dad had a dirt bike so naturally I wanted one. The only problem was I couldn't even ride a bicycle. My dad told me as soon as I could ride a bike without training wheels he would buy me a dirt bike. I grabbed a wrench, took off the training wheels, and by the end of that same night I was successful in achieving that goal. The very next morning my dad bought me a brand-new PW 50.
Two years later, I had my first race at amateur day during the 1994 Dallas Supercross event. After years of hard work, I secured a a local sponsorship from Grapevine Kawaski and tried to become a professional rider. Unfortunately, in 2005, I sustained an injury that ended my motocross career.
Having lost my dream of professional motocross, I was thankful to get a medical waiver to join the Navy. In the Navy, I quickly moved from an equipment operator role to a combat role, serving as an ASF (auxiliary security force). On my third deployment to Afghanistan I sustained an injury in combat that ended my Navy career.
After processing out of the Navy, I found myself struggling to adjust to civilian life until a good friend talking me into going riding with him. It was as it the clouds suddenly lifted. I was hooked again and slowly began to enjoy life again. I kept riding and perfecting my mechanic skills.
Life was good, but something was still missing. And then out of nowhere I got a phone call that changed my life. The phone call was from a Pro Supercross team owner inviting me to mechanic for Ty Freehill. During that trip, I met Ty’s teammate, Deven Raper. Deven and I hit it off and I have been his professional mechanic ever since.
With Deven now contemplating retirement, I made the decision to utilize the skills I perfected as a professional supercross mechanic and open my own shop - IGY6Powersports. IGY6 is a military acronym that means “I Got Your 6”, meaning “I Have Your Back”. That was my commitment as a Navy ASF and as Deven’s mechanic, and now it’s my commitment to you and the DFW powersports community.
Thanks for the support!
David
